Assembly Welcomes Senate Committee Advancement of S.2432 Honoring Former Secretary of the Navy Paul Ignatius

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Armenian Assembly of America welcomes yesterday's advancement by the U.S. Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs of legislation introduced by Senator Adam Schiff (D-CA) to designate the United States Postal Service facility in Glendale, California, as the “Paul Ignatius Post Office.”

The bipartisan measure S. 2432 honors former Secretary of the Navy Paul Ignatius, whose extraordinary lifetime of public service, leadership, and dedication to the nation has left an enduring legacy. A companion bill introduced by Congresswoman Laura Friedman (D-CA) passed the U.S. House of Representatives in June.

The bill would designate the post office at 6444 San Fernando Road — where Ignatius worked as a temporary clerk while a college student, on the same street his grandfather built their family home nearly a century ago — as the "Paul Ignatius Post Office."

Born in Glendale, California, to Armenian parents from the Kharpert region, Secretary Ignatius served as the 59th Secretary of the Navy from 1967 to 1969 under President Lyndon B. Johnson, and previously served as Assistant Secretary of the Army and Under Secretary of Defense under President John F. Kennedy. He was the highest-ranking Armenian American in the U.S. government during his tenure. He later served as President of The Washington Post and President of the Air Transport Association.

In September 2023, the Armenian Assembly presented Secretary Ignatius with the George Deukmejian Award during a special tribute in Washington, D.C. Upon his passing on November 6, 2025, a memorial service was held at the Washington National Cathedral, and he was laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery.
