WASHINGTON, D.C. – House Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer (D-MD) released the following statement marking the 101st anniversary of the Armenian genocide:
“On Sunday, we will remember the victims of the Armenian genocide, which began on April 24, 1915 with the detention of some of the leading figures in Armenian society and culminated in the murders of 1.5 million civilians over a four-year period. Even a century later, this tragedy continues to bring tears to the eyes of millions of Armenians around the world, including many who are living here in our country and are contributing to the work of making America free from all forms of malice and intolerance. All people and all nations must heed the lessons of the Armenian genocide and resolve to eradicate bigotry and xenophobia from this Earth, cognizant of their dangerous consequences. I join in marking this solemn observance and in honoring the resilience of the Armenian people as they build a future based on freedom, democracy, and justice.”
