On Death Cases in RA Armed Forces and NK Defense Army in January-September 2015

Helsinki Citizens’ Assembly (HCA) Vanadzor Office published a report on death cases in Republic of Armenia (RA) Armed Forces and Nagorno Karabakh (NK) Defense Army from January to September, 2015.


According to the findings of the studies by the HCA Vanadzor Office, between January-September 2015 the RA Armed Forces and the NK Defense Army registered 39 incidents which caused the death of 54 military servicemen. From the previous year during January-September 2014, the rate of registered death cases totaled 37.


In the report, 31 of the 54 death cases in 2015 were caused by ceasefire violation, 3 cases by killing (1 premeditated homicides and 2 caused by breach of military service rules), 5 cases by suicide or causing someone to commit a suicide, 1 by breach of military service rules, 12 by accidents (11 car accidents and 1 still unclear), and the other 2 by health problems. In fact, 24 of the 31 death cases caused by the ceasefire violations occurred in NK, and 7 in the RA. The Table below shows the compared data of the areas of ceasefire violations and rate of death cases in the same period of the past years.

The Table shows the rate of death cases caused by ceasefire violations increased recently in NKR and RA. 


Note that the rate of the death cases (31 servicemen) caused by the ceasefire violations in January-September 2015 exceeds the total rate of the death cases (26 servicemen) caused by

the ceasefire violations in 2014. In fact, the rate of the death cases caused by the ceasefire violations in January-September of the past 2 years has sharply increased, as compared with the rates of 2013. Hence, the total rate of death cases made up 10% in 2013, 44.4% in 2014 and 59.9% in 2015.
