Washington, D.C. - The Armenian Assembly of America (Assembly) welcomes Representative Dina Titus's (D-NV) introduction today of a Joint Resolution of Disapproval to block the administration's proposed $700 million sale of General Electric F-110 jet engines to Turkey.
The resolution would prohibit the proposed Foreign Military Sale submitted to Congress under the Arms Export Control Act on June 24, covering the material and technical data needed to integrate F-110 engines into Turkey's indigenous KAAN aircraft system. Under the Arms Export Control Act, Congress had 15 days from the June 24 notification to introduce a resolution of disapproval.
The move comes as Turkey continues to press for its own readmission to the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter program, from which it was removed in 2019 after acquiring the Russian-made S-400 air defense system in violation of U.S. law. Turkey also faced harsh sanctions under the Countering America’s Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA).
In a Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission hearing this week, Michael Rubin, Middle East Forum Director of Policy Analysis, warned that transferring cutting-edge military technology to Turkey is "as dangerous as providing America's military technology and trade secrets to China," citing Erdogan's ambitions to reverse-engineer the technology for Turkey's indigenous KAAN fighter program.
"Rewarding Turkey with sensitive American defense technology, whether F-35s or the engines that will power its next-generation KAAN fighters, sends exactly the wrong signal to President Erdogan," said Director of Congressional Relations, Mariam Khaloyan.
Established in 1972, the Armenian Assembly of America is the largest Washington-based nationwide organization promoting public understanding and awareness of Armenian issues. The Assembly is a strictly non-partisan, 501(c)(3) tax-exempt membership organization.
