Presidents Aliyev and Erdogan are very much responsible for the latest bloodshed and for Azerbaijan’s failure to comply with a peace process that rejects the use of force. They consistently resort to shameful tactics to distract their publics and the international community.
Azerbaijan’s authoritarian president has intentionally escalated the violence against innocent civilians to pressure Armenia into making concessions.
For too long, Azerbaijan has flaunted the 1994 cease-fire agreement and targeted civilians, including repeatedly shelling Armenian schoolchildren. Azerbaijan has also used its military to destroy centuries-old Christian Armenian relics, including an ancient cemetery known for its unique Armenian cross-stones in Julfa.
